Your #1 could work most likely for perhaps the average group? My group though has one person trained in stealth. As a result with the lowest person rolling with a zero or even negative skill values.

and #3 (?) is something to consider. I'll have to ponder that one.

Two alternatives:
1 - Lowest untrained value makes the check. Every untrained person makes an Aid Another check (success = +0, failure = -2). Every trained person makes an Aid Another check (success = +2, failure = +0). The thought being that the stealthy folks are able to provide enough tips and whatnot that the klutz is stealthy.

3 - Speed modifiers. Stealth master makes the check. Everyone else makes an Aid Another roll. For every failed Aid check, speed is reduced by 5'. If speed is reduced to 0, the party fails to be stealthy. The thought here being that the party takes care to go slow enough that people can be stealthy.

Very good points on all points. I'd debated on adding trained versus untrained in there and you essentially hit what I was driving for. The staying in range was implied but I didn't 'hard code' as I wasn't thinking of being in 'squares mode' for these but I can see where that would apply. I would probably set it at within 6 squares just so the average character could make a full move per turn. But since we're adding a dwarf to the group the 5 would override that. Darn those stumpy legs of theirs! ;)

I would go with option 1, but with the following changes:

-A person untrained in stealth can aid other, and if they pass their check they don't apply their -2 penalty to the 'stealth leader's' roll. I'd change it this way because it seems odd to me that a person untrained can add +4 to the roll (-2 to +2) and a trained person can only add +2 (0 to +2).

-The 'stealth leader' must stay within 5 squares of the group, if he goes outside that then the group is on its own.

Great idea as usual Dennis. 8)

It certainly can be bad. Right now I'm treating both sides equally. In our last session, much to the player's bemusement and amusement, an elite that was dominated and made to walk off a 50' cliff suffered 55 damage (average of 4+3+2+1 d10's). Then as he climbed up a ladder that was dispelled as he got about halfway up, took another 16 damage from (2+1 d10's). All my houserules are works in progress, as they work or don't work they're enforced or removed, tweaked where necessary.

Isn't it bad to have "players rule only" for such things? It is like saying "you are total suckers compared to this goblin that can fall 100 feet more than you and still live".

That is a viable solution. It removes level from the equation completely which I like as I've been removing level in other fashions. I'd start the falling damage at 11+ feet though. As a kid we used to jump off the roof of a shed at my grandmothers, no idea why we did it, it was almost 40 years ago but we could do it without taking any 'damage'. At the same time I once fell about 18' out of a tree I was trying to climb and landed on my back. No permanent damage but I almost passed out before my lungs started working again.

But I like it. Let me consider it and put it forth to the players. Most of my house rules are approved as a co-op system.

I understand your point but it seems a bit overcomplicated for what you want (yes I know it is actually the old school rules but with d10's instead of d6's)
It seems that you want to make falling damage realistic, so how about this for a much quicker and easier way to handle it.
Each 10 feet you fall you loose your healing surge value in damage.
So 10 feet no biggy, 20 bloodied, 30 hurting, 40 dead.
Assume hard surface. Subtract 10 feet for soft surface. Apply skill checks to acrobatics to final damage.

Cool, thanks for the update. I managed to give 3.5 a miss mostly so I wasn't familiar with it. Yeah I thought it would need some work overall to make it more cohesive in terms of balance and usability.

It's an attempt to convert the Taint rules from Heroes of Horror, a fantastic fluff book from 3.5. Not a bad attempt, but the symptoms and thresholds seem arbitrary. It's an idea worth a re-write, maybe similar to a Disease Track or the Artifact rules.

those are arches for an alcove on mold 71. you can push them up form the bottom to get them out a little easier, but they do like to be in there longer. you can glue them together carefully and they work pretty well.

the triangle bits are handy for floor decorations, actually. I've used the bigger arches for feet of doors and other decorative bits.

if you are lazy about the mold 85 type stuff, http://www.itarsworkshop.com/catalog/ has a nice selection :)

I've been going through about 5 moldings a night the last couple of days, one about every 45 minutes or so. Need to set up a more permanent - temporary workstation in the house so I don't have to keep setting up / tearing down for crazy things like dinner and allt hat. ;) When it warms up I'll move out to the garage or on the back deck.

I've found that the most efficient means of casting a lot of bricks is to do a cast before I leave for work, a cast when I get home from work, and a cast before bed. Also, for dungeons, you're going to use up floor tiles like crazy. You might want to consider either making a custom floor tile mold, or buying a second floor tile mold.

Cheers!

It's really neat, but did I miss the explanation about what it's for? Obviously gaming, but what does having a piece of glass above the minis get you? And is it tall enough for Huge-and Gargantuan-sized minis? It would be a shame not to be able to fight the big bad dragon because he doesn't have enough clearance...

Ugh, looks like I may have deleted them or didn't save them which is odd because I know I exported them as PDF's. Ben over at bensrpgpile has some which as it turns out is where I got the idea from watching a few minutes of their play videos. They obviously took a little extra time than I did. I churned my 25 out in about the same minutes and cut it all out by hand. http://bensrpgpile.com/?page_id=11

Yes they did. Unfortunately their performance in terms of combat and tactics wasn't as well planned. :) But I think I've got a good idea how to get them out of it that will help further develop the non-tactical side of their characters and the NPC's. Stay tuned. Due to the holidays we won't be back in session till the 2nd at the earliest.

Which can work of course but realistically more than once? I've certainly Geas'd in my years of DM'ing but I dislike Deus Ex Machina twists to save a group. There's only so many wandering healers days or weeks from any civilization. I might if pressed go so far as to toss in a History check, "You remember tales of a witch, driven out of her village that inhabits a cave in the area. Although branded evil she is reputed to have great powers over life and death and those powers were the only reason she was driven away rather than killed outright." and then create a moral quandary with the group about 'dealing with evil to do good'.

'Do you sink to the level of “A wandering healer comes across the scene and agrees to resurrect the poor man if only you’ll go fetch him 10 belts from the orc tribes in the next canyon.”?'

No, of course not! Let your PLAYERS do the sinking. 'A wandering healer of Tiamat comes across the scene, and agrees to resurrect the poor man if only you’ll agree to be branded with the Mark of the Fivefold Mother, which entitles the Church of Tiamat to one (1) favor within the next year and a day.
:) You could do it actually. Get some 1/4 dowels from the hardware/lumber store and then put one every inch or so through the can. Turn them about 60 degrees off center each time in a clockwise direction. You'd need to glue in a slant at the bottom and an opening to dump it out but it would work.

This is neat... I've been looking for some kind of template for handing game ideas off to someone else to DM... We however, play 3x/PFRPG... If we use it, we'll be removing the 4E art and references, but keeping your credits.

Thanks!

Interesting post. I'd never really thought about advancing characters at set points in the story as opposed to at a certain, completely arbitrary XP level. I might have to use that in an upcoming campaign.

Also, I just stumbled upon your blog after finding a copy of your 4e module template in a DM'ing forum. I have to say-- great work. I'm definitely going to be using the template (with proper attribution, of course), and I can't wait to come back and look through some of your old posts where I have a feeling I'll get some more good ideas. Thanks!

Starting with level 1 the players choose one of the following five options per level until they've picked each one once, then they start over again, +1 to attack rolls, +1 to AC, +1 to FRW, +1 all skills (I did away with the +1/2 level bonus to skills), +1 to damage/+1d6 on critical hits (weapons may override this). Magic items become 'cool toys' and don't drastically impact combat output so it's not critical that every character constantly upgrade their weapon, armour and neck slots to stay abreast of the power curve.

It also means that you can capture your players form time to time, strip them of their gear and they can grab any mundane weapons/armour and be completely effective.

The most difficult part is having to do character sheets manually since the Character Builder isn't designed to deal with this.

What rules are you using for "bonus" progression to avoid the necessity for pluses on gear? Do you distribute "plus-less" gear normally otherwise for the daily powers?

Aeofel's 18 climb check was obviously one of the major turning points, but I feel that you're letting the other PCs off the hook a little easily. Sure, it's easy to blame Chris Perkins for not retconning the DC on the climb check, but Aeofel was in the acid for, what, two rounds? As another commenter said upthread, the PCs could have made it down to him and either assisted his climb (which surely would have allowed Aeofel to pass the climb check with his 18) or healed him such that a failure wouldn't have meant death.

As to whether or not an acid pit that inflicts double-digit damage per round is a fair trap for what I think was a first-level character, well, that seems like a legitimate beef.

Bottom line: the PCs had their chances, and Aeofel died a proper avenger's death. Wil seems genuinely excited about where this goes next, as am I. Hopefully, the story will become even more compelling because Aeofel died. We'll see.

I did say, even empasized it several times, it's the permanency of the death that bothered me the most. Obviously this is apparently a two camps situation.

And p.s. I am fully aware of what 's are for. That doesn't mean I won't make mistakes. I'm long done with term papers where I might actually pay attention to what I'm typing much less go back and check something I type. It's always been interesting to me that "s always seem to be the target of punctuation superiority complexes.

For those interested, Wil posted about it on his blog, http://bit.ly/1R4neP. Worth noting that his death was at the climax of the session as well, not the middle. This was part 8 of the podcast, after all.

Personally, I think Chris was in the right on both counts. While the DM's story is important, the player's story is just as if not moreso, and that story is built on the player's actions and the dice they roll. Every time the DM fudges a difficulty or gives a pity reroll, it steals some of the thrill from the critical hit that takes out the boss or the lucky skill roll that saves the day.. and denies them the shock of seeing a character fall into darkness because they tripped on a dangerous ledge without a belay, or get roasted alive because they assumed narrative causality would save them from the angry dragon. Just look at how this one turned out: If Aeofel had slipped out of the pit by DM fiat, the adventure would have been a rather bland partial victory. The artifact retrieved but no loot, the big bad escaped. Instead it's, as someone on Wil's blog noted, Aquisition Inc's Empire Strikes Back. They're beaten down and demoralized by the loss of their ally, and now bound and determined to track down his soul and restore him by any means necessary or at least get vengeance on the Ambershards. What was a rather slapstick series with Aeofel as the straight man has developed an epic story.

More than just letting the dice rule, though, I think it was an appropriate fate. True to the Avenger's nature, Aeofel charged after his prey not once but twice, the first time blindly following a teleporter away from his allies, the second lunging at the dwarf who had just rang the gong, seemingly confident even in his bloodied state and within charge range of the avenger that he now had the upper hand. And though it's hard to judge without being able to see the map, I suspect that the rest of AQI could have gotten to him in time for a save had they been willing to take some lumps from opportunity attacks and falling damage, but greed and self preservation won out in the end. Chris even had the opportunity in the end there to let Jim pull up Aeofel's half-dissolved skull, but I suspect he felt that doing so once the rest of the gang had accepted the permanence fo Aeofel's death would have cheapened it. And now he and Wil have another 6 months or so to plan his return, either through a lucky bit of bone left dangling from his iron bands and an expensive resurrection, Aeofel's return as a revenant, or as another new hire joining them on their continuing quest.

PS: Dude.. apostrophes for contractions and possessives, not plurals. Unless you're a greengrocer. http://bit.ly/pddBG

I'm sure Wil will be back for the next podcast, all the same. Whether as Revenant Aeofel or not, they won't screw up the group dynamic.

Also, Scott Kurtz and Wil are friends. Most of that was all good natured, as you can tell by Wil's later blog post.

Brilliant! I love this idea. I've been trying to come up with a way to reward my players for going above and beyoned, both at the table and away from it without resorting to individual exp bonuses or monetary rewards. I LOVE THIS! GIMME MORE, BROTHER!

True on the spoiler. I didn't even think about that. :)

As an aside I strongly believe that it was Wil's determination to RP a 'real' character in spite of the others that brought them to the RP well to drink and they found it good. Go back and listen to all the podcasts over a short time and it comes off to me that Wil's unabashed, unself concious roleplaying taught the others that hey it was okay to try it. Of course he has the huge benefit IMO of being an actor where RP'ing is a fact of life.

I agree, players need to know there are consequences to actions even well RP'd actions. My biggest source of... gruntleness, is what I can only see as permadeath for the character<em> in this situation</em>. At their levels (1-2?) they simply wouldn't have the resources in any plausible way to revive him. I've never really enjoyed fiction where the writer kills off characters. If Aoefel is dead-dead will Wil continue playing? And if not that's going to be a darn shame.

With the exception of not adjusting the DC of the pit I think it was a fair death. It seems unfair to give a PC extra chances to live based on how much backstory they've written, and sooner or later the players are gonna pick up on that.

Also, giving the spoiler warning after the actual spoiler (which is in the title) doesn't help all that much ;-)

I know Chris Perkins has a reputation for not holding back on character death, but I believe he only does it if the players have made a serious flaw.

Storywise, both Binwin and Aeofel were being RP'd well. Binwin was torn between his revenge and his friends. He was trying to do the honourable thing - stay with his friends. However, Binwin split the party by trying to get Aoefel to enact his revenge for him. Lying to his friends originally, and not fully committing to protecting his friends by pulling Aeofel back cost an innocent their life (two assuming the prisoner will not have a nice end). And there was no 'reward' in terms of revenge, just a hollow coat (the one that got the others except Aeofel to join in the first place).

That's a brilliant story and character beat for Binwin.

The fact it was also a loss to an innocent player doing aa darn good RP job as Wil was doing really hits the story point home. Character and player shame making it a great ending, though not a happy one.

Just a thought!

If that's the case then there's probably a plan for it. Chris strikes me as a good dm and good dm's aren't just arbitrarily vindictive that way or they're not good. :)

Yes I'm not sure of how serious that whole intra-group play by play was. Given Wil's what seemed to me to be obvious attachment to the character I do hope Chris has something up his sleeve.

I also really would have liked to have seen the other characters have done something to help resolve the issue. Without actually seeing the map it sounds like Jim Darkmagic could have used a combination of Move, Expeditious Retreat, Action Point Move. But again I don't know if Chris didn't have a real idea of how many HP Al had and that a single failed climb check would kill him. I was a little surprised that Al was still only a Level 1 character though though. A level 2 character would have been enough to have given him another round to absorb the acid without dying.

Heh, as far as giving him more time for doing other things, it has been only 2 days in roughly over the first half of this year. Even if you give him a day before and after for travel time that's only 6 days out of 6 months devoted to playing.

At Penny Arcade Expo at either the first Q&A or the PA Draws a Strip panel, the PA guys mentioned that Chris Perkins *really* wanted to kill *someone* during this session. I can also only think that this is actually a blessing for Wil in disguise because he can go back to booking more jobs and doing more writing.

Scott Kurtz *was* a bit of a dick, though.

I also have a hard time believing that an adventurer has a 4' cube of solid gold. A lot of that value would be in magic items, and gems. I like the idea of disenchanting magic items to power up or create other items, which to me makes much more sense!

It depends on the setting I would offer. A traditional fantasy setting especially one in a PoL style would be very dependent on hard currency. One carried ones valuables not a checkbook. A more eberron style where there might be a banking system of some kind would certainly be different. Personally other than consumables I've never had magic shoppes. Magic was rare and just not for sale so I was able to keep things in check naturally. The richest a group has been in one of
my many campaigns was 12ish leveland they had a castle built for 25000 gold which drained them. But they attracted peasents who tithed and kept them on ale and wenches and fancy lads. Then the dragons started showing up as a result of a dragons death curse and things got nasty.

You don't have to let players buy/sell magic items at those prices. I've also thought of it as convenience to judge the relative value of magic items, as opposed to how much gold it would actually take to buy it. I liked 3E's amount of money available in a town of a given size.

Or you can liken it to the real world. When a company buys another for US $40 billion, they don't use wads of 100s. It's all paper value. I think a PC with 3mil GP on his character sheet has the same buying power as someone with $3mil in stocks, except you can run someone through with a flaming sword...

That rocks. I had the first two of the Slavepits series, the Keep on the Borderlands (of course!) and, and...that was it. But I still have my old Basic set (w/the red dragon rearing up against a fighter in plate and a magic user), and the vaunted White Box, with all the xtra books from that set. I ought to try running them one day...a party of 1st level chaotic elves...how does that sound?

In 4e, damage is healed immediately overnight. This fits what HP is in 4e – it’s basically a defeat gauge, the closer you are to defeat, outside your physical condition, the more damage you have taken. Many people don’t like this aspect, and some have come up with their own injury mechanics. Usually modeled after the Disease system, which is the one most accessible way to have a long-lasting penalty in D&D 4e. Thus injury is removed from HP entirely but still there.

Cool stuff! Since I do my gaming via MapTool, I've been looking for a parser that could convert from the CB/MB to the maptool tokens. Seeing people do some parsing work like this gives me hope!

Very good points. I can't say how important the "Play to the players" part is. I've participated in too many games where the GM insisted on forcing his players back onto the rail path HE wanted. That's utter crap and is just going to make everyone unhappy.

Even with campaigns that I've spent huge amounts of time designing, I still had a blast if the party went off the edge of the map and I had to ad lib the entire session.

Kudos on not being a rules lawyer too. For the sake of game pacing all too often I would fake the math in my head, come up with a arbitrary and hopefully unbiased result that the players would both believe and have fun with. I've seen times where the dice were merciless and wanted nothing but Armageddon. Well I'd alter that, allowing for a very narrow escape and it was much preferred over character loss.

So again, kudos on concentrating on *making it fun* more so than making it perfectly accurate. ;)

[...] Achievement Unlocks The folks over at Key Our Cars came up with achievement ideas based on their theories of what they’ll find in the freshly released D&D 4e DMG2. I like some of these, and may throw them into the mix of my game if I ever get behind the screen again. I just picked up my DMG2 yesterday, and I haven’t made it to the “achievements” section just yet, so I may have more input on this idea at a later date. [...]

I like the play on folklore: A lot of middle-European cultures (very specifically, in Lithuania) have a belief that cats will sit on the chest of sleeping people and slowly steal their souls. However, most cats do not succeed in doing so because they fall asleep while saying their pre-soul-stealing prayers! Guess this is what happens when they don't nod off!

On a side note, your controllers must be pretty frustrated, given that a lot of your homebrew monsters have a big shift/ignore difficult terrain power.

Otherwise, cool monster and hook!

Various places, typically as cheaply as a I can. Lowes, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, Staples, Michaels, Hobby Lobby (probably some regional specifics in that list). They're sold as all kinds of things, tool managers, bead holders, sewing boxes, tackle boxes. I typically pay between $2 and $6 for them.

Sure!
I'll take the cot in your garage, and I'll need an entry-level job somewhere in your neighborhood so I can stay afloat.

Heh, nice to see that I wasn't the only one inspired by that comic. I made a design and put it together at the sign shop I work at - quite different from yours, and I'm still playing with the design, because I'd like to build more "suspense" into the dice rolling function...anyway, <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/39578858@N07/3857141173/" rel="nofollow">here's</a> one of my prototypes.

Very nice idea here Dennis.
Seems to work like a charm, and requires really very little calculations from both sides (DM & Players).

Don't forget about Aid Another.

Our villagers only need to roll attack vs. AC10 to grant an ally within reach +2 bonus. Arm 'em with a Reach weapon and 10 villagers could grant up to +20 to one ringleader. That should be enough for a horde of angry villagers to hit even the highest level foe.

There's a reason why mobs went after Dracula with long-handled pitchforks :D

I'll see if I can dig them up. To put it at it's most basic, for 4th edition you get rid of the +1/2 level bonus that players get and the +1 per level bonus that monsters get to attacks and defenses. This applies to attacks, defenses and skills. There are other things that need touching upon but I'll see if I can find some time to elaborate on those.

I love that idea. The inability for a level 1 char to even touch a level 10 character is one of my gripes about level based systems. Could you expand on this a bit more? maybe post some of the threads you mentioned?

I have actually run online campaigns, even when the only tools were IRC clients as well as run them using Neverwinter Nights and if the physical gaming doesn't pan out it's certainly something on my backburner as an option.

I tried this last night, and it went well. Mostly it resulted in the mostly dead characters getting to crawl away and get healed, and the ranger got to dish out a very appropriate Hunt's End.

How do you deal with damage taken while mostly dead? I think it would be interesting to largely drop the idea of negative hit points and instead say that damage taken while mostly dead counts as an automatic failed save -- possibly multiple automatic failed saves based on total HP value. So, (damage / (HP/4)), round up = number of failed saves. Avoids negative hit points, puts a cap on the number of times you can get hit, etc.

Anyway, I really do like letting the players stay more active during a long combat! Thanks.

You're welcome! I'm glad you like the class. I have several other homebrew projects as well, and they can all be found at Bolermos Online. These include: new races from the Monster Manual (Cambion, Griffon, Lycanthrope, Satyr, Vampire, Dark One, Gargoyle, Ghost, Banshrae, and Unicorn), a 4e homebrew "Monk" class, and I'm currently working on a 4e "Dragoon" class as well!

To those with interests in this - i.e. running fan sites - it was known since a few months before the release of 4e. You're noticing this a bit late, Dennis. Sorry for your delayed pain.
And yeah, it does say what it appears to be saying. Quite a problem for the whole gamut of fan sites like Athas.org and the others for the various cancelled D&D campaign settings.

[...] One Shot, One Kill While the system over at Key Our Cars is a little cumbersome, it does allow for the quick dispatch of a single sentry who is just there to make life a little (not lots) difficult for the PCs. While I call the system cumbersome, it is less hefty that all-out combat, so it is an improvement on forcing the PCs to roll initiative in order to slit the throat of that lone sentry. I like the system quite a bit, and will probably pull it out of my hat when the time comes. It’s definitely a good one. I think part of the cumbersomeness of the system is the reliance on the coup de grace mechanics of D&D, and that’s something Wizards of the Coast has never made easy for the PCs or the GM to remember.
Glad it's of use to you at least for the ideas. This in particular, well it just kinda sucks as a player to be 'down'. You can hear it in the Penny Arcade podcasts when Kurtz goes down and keeps trying to make saving throws. The problem seems to stem from players not playing attention to their health till they're down. Is getting stuck making saving throws their fault if there was healing available? Yes. But is it fun? No. So I thought this way would a) drive home the fact that the player REALLY needs healing and b) let the player continue to participate (other than a single roll to see if they stabilized or not). Or that's my thoughts on it.

That is a great idea. I'd toyed with aplying a blanet -2 penalty upon reaching Bloodied, but I think I like this better. Couple that with your one-shot-one-kill post from yesterday and you're firing on all pistons. Thanks for the ideas.

That's a very good idea. You could make each section perhaps 4" high and that would let you build it as high as you wanted. And yes that would make one sweet 'dice tube' to store your dice in. I feel the need to hit the plumbing section to see what might be available in the needed sizes to make a prototype or two.

Perhaps something like this: The tower could be composed of separate cylinders which stack and rotate (and interconnect obviously). Each would contain the crossed elements which could then be randomly aligned by rotating each section. The bottom cap (angled to facilitate dice exit, I assume) would also rotate to reveal or conceal the exit gap. If the bottom dice receiver cup was a separate piece that could be removed and used to cap the top, you could then store your dice within the tower when the crossed cylinder elements were aligned. Apparently I have too much free time.

Thanks a bunch. There was a big spike on the site Monday and it was an unexpected, unexplained boost. Now I know where it came from.

We have a new one releasing on Monday - our first anniversary and there's a chance to sign up for a benefits program. There's also a subscription if anyone is interested and I think I'm out of things to plug at the moment. ;)

My thoughts are their actions will grant either an Attack or Defense boost, Heal damage on a unit using Arcana, Athletics, Endurance,Heal, History, Insight, Perception, Thievery depending on the situation. Probably a DC based on X+the current Attack/Defense value. So the higher their value the harder it is for the PC's to affect them.

I was also considering adding in a morale check, say a DC 10 and they roll a d20+(Lower of Attack or Defense) once one of those numbers hit negatives. And then PC's could boost that with Bluff, Intimidate, Diplomacy checks. If the unit routs the PC's would have one chance to recover them at a higher DC and if not then the unit is 'destroyed'. If they do recover then probably go back in action at half A/D. Routed units tend to rout again after all.

That kind of thing is what I was thinking about.

Also do remember this is just an initial "How could I do this?" kind of idea, it might completely suck in practice.

I agree with all this. I'd much, MUCH rather have players who play characters which go against the grain - the pacifist ex-fighter, the honest Rogue (who is trying *so* hard to become a Paladin) or the clueless Ranger who couldn't track a herd of wildebeast. Give me all of them, and more, over Yet Another Fighter with Greatsword and STR 20, please!

Definitely. Although the most talked about ones decades later are things like when the wizard saw deamons coming up out of some stolen necromatic books and fireballed the books, the wagon, the tents and the other players in fear. :) But yes the close escapes either by running or just barely squeaking an win out of a bad situation are way up on the memorable list.

Oh indeed, the groups arent classic groups, but that often occours at an RPGA table.

I also agree that if the whole group is sub-par the DM should scale things down to compensate for inexperienced players/poor characters; and vice-versa the DM should scale up for experienced/optimal characters. Otherwise there is no challenge, and the enjoyment of the game (generally) is from overcoming challenges.

I think the most memorable RPG moments are when a character escapes from a really tight situation through the narrowest of margins. I know the majority of my favourite RPG moments are like that.

That's where we both hit a gray area perhaps. I can see where it would cause group strife with some, most perhaps groups especially perhaps today's groups which for better or worse do have some influence from MMOG's and Raiding where you HAVE to perform your role or wipe. And a player causing real issues for the other players should be an issue for the DM.

But as a DM if a group as a whole was performing under par, I'd try adjusting the encounters before I started to enforce a play style. Make them challenging based on the groups 'real' ability, not their expected ability if that makes sense?

One could play devil's advocate and say that in the last example the DM might need to ask one of the other players to play another role? The groups are 'imbalanced' in both examples from the classic group make up.

Or in the end simply tell the player their play style isn't a good fit, tell them why, and move on.

But it's all good, every group should play in a way that works for them and the DM should be and is responsible to make it fun for them all as equitably as they can.

I agree in essence with you, I dont think its the DMs job to intervene for the most part. However it is the DMs job to intervene when a sub-par character is detracting from the enjoyment of the game.

Sure that one person may really love his Wizard who nukes everything (including his allies), but if one of the players at the table doesnt like being targetted its down to the DM to put a stop to it, for the enjoyment of all.

An example of one of the things you may not agree with is this:
We play 4e LFR (Living Forgotten Realms) and one of our players repeatedly plays defenders, however the said player rarely ever marks anything, and their paladin tends to spend 90% of the comabt at range throwing javelins.
Fortunatly their paladin is in a group with 3 other defenders (and 2 leaders, we are like a brick wall), however their swordmage is in a group with 4 strikers and no leader. This leads to problems, everyone at the table expects them to act like a defender, marking things and generally taking the heat off the other characters so they can do their job. This is the time when the DM(s) need to step in and try and steer the player toward acting more like a defender, as their current behaviour is detrimental to the group.

There's an official precedent for this idea.
The RPGA has something called "Reward Cards" which are essentially the same thing.

They have an added "neato" feature, when a Reward Card is used, it is turned sideways on the table. Each sideways Reward Card (referred to as "in play") provides either an untyped +1 or +2 bonus to any die roll...for any player except the one who used the card and put it in play.

It's a great dynamic for fostering cooperation, planning, and strategy - with a little metagaming thrown in for good measure.

I have used those with great results. The 2nd edition specialized archery fighter that lost three fingers on his bow hand after reaching through what he was just sure was illusionary fire and would have otherwise died as a result. The loss of a hand to another fighter that took massive damage rather than killing him. A mage without depth perception because he lost an eye after having his head chomped by a t rex rather than dying. Made casting fireballs interesting afterwards... :) But sometimes players just do really stupid things either through metagaming "he'd never put something we weren't supposed to just be able to fight and kill." or because they're screwing around and being dumb on purpose and have to suffer the consequences of their actions.

Followed your trackback from my article on GnomeStew. Thanks for the shout-out, by the way.

Have you thought about playing with less lethal, but equally debilitating results? Dismemberment, extensive burn scars, blindness, deafness, etc... One game I played in had a rule that 'cure' spells left scars; it took a Heal or greater spell to remove them. So someone burned by a dragon might have such extensive scarring that his Dex, Con, and Cha are reduced quite a bit, possibly along with his movement rate and carrying capacity.

On the other hand, taking a full power blast of dragonfire to the face, after extensive injury, probably should just leave a pile of ash and a pair of smoking boots. (Literary convention pretty much requires the latter.)

A lot of the original powers were interrupts that had no triggers. It was slightly confusing. If you go to the Dragon article forum you will see the complaints.

Hmmm, you bring up a good point that might explain why I need new players so often...

I can say that it was the player's actions or lack of them that got their characters killed. I'm a fudger, always have been. If players are playing smart or simply not stupid then I'll nudge dice, to hit and damage, and monster decisions a bit so that things work out so the players are unlikely to die. With 4th edition, things are balanced though to the point where I now roll my dice in the open and I've only occasionally had to nudge the bad guys to shift targets to spread the damage around.

I really like 4e for that. It's so closer to being balanced than previous editions that it takes a load of work off me to constantly adjust things on the fly.

Oh my. I hope you mean you're killing off characters, not the players! A player can always make a new character, but find a good player is a resource not to be wasted. I jest, of course. I know you mean that characters are dying and not the players.

I'm glad to hear you rarely kill off a character. I tend to kill very few myself, but I have had more than several kill themselves through stupid actions. Stupidity in action is rarely forgivable, but equally rare is the random kill just because the dice say so.

DMing a small group, I've found that missed daily powers and encounter powers really put the screws on the players. I've been allowing action points to recharge them on missed rolls (encounter during a fight and daily after a rest). This is a neat idea you have.

I can see where you'd have a problem if you're always getting new players. :( Definitely going to be a factor in the speed of combat. In terms of damage, I'm adding 1/2 level damage to everyone (pc/npc). This reduces the 'value' of base weapon damage and as the level's go up it tends to iron out the minor differences between weapons. In regards to damage rolls, I'd toyed with simply doing average damage on everything but critical hits which work normally but the PC's like to roll dice so I didn't do anything with the idea.
I'm adding in recharge tokens which do something similar to your use of action points but leave the AP alone for their standard uses.

I've never been a big fan of fumbles personally but that's a personal preference and not a condemnation. They penalize the players more than the NPC's since the NPC's rarely last more than a few rounds and have little chance to fumble as a result.

Essentially though yes we're both rolling in the same area on all these. :)

Thank you for Random.org -- that is so cool. I just generated 1000 d20 rolls, and will bring the two pages, printed, to my session next week to see how it goes. I really like a lot about 4e, but slow slow slow combat is really getting to me. I've been running short delve-like sessions at a local game store, and every week brings a few people who've never played, or are low on the "I get it!" totem pole...it makes we want to bring out my REALLY Evil DM side. I'm also toying with some house rules that, I hope, will both smooth out and speed up play. Here they are:
    * Devastating Critical Hits: Crits do maximum total damage plus additional maximum weapon damage. Example: If the damage of an attack is d8+5 (total modifiers), a critical hit would do 21 points.
    * Scaling Damage: As characters increase in level, the base damage they do will increase as well, somewhat analogous to the even-level skill and to-hit increase. These increases take place at levels 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, and 30. Each increase adds +1 to base damage for all attacks.
    * Fumbles: Roll a 1 during combat and you miss, and must roll again. If another 1 is rolled, you’ve fumbled, which results in something nasty happening to you, your equipment, and/or nearby allies. Sorry.
    * Players will compute maximum damage and half maximum damage for each attack and record them with each attack and power on the character sheet. For example, if an attack has a damage value of d8+5, maximum would be 13, and half would be 6. Damage will not be rolled during combat, but rather will use one of those two values. If an attack hits, it does half damage, or full damage if it beats the target number by at least 5. Thus, there are only a to-hit rolls made—no damage rolls.
    * Action Points: In addition to the standard usage of APs, players made trade in 1 AP for an additional use of an expended encounter power, or 2 APs for an additional use of an expended daily power (this breaks the rule of 1 AP/encounter, but oh well).

Thoughts?

And is a valid issue and certainly a way to deal with it. In part that's why I didn't link the quote, I didn't want to give ammunition to the 'offender' if it was something like that. Certainly I've had to deal with player issues of all kinds, from basic and blatant cheating to players if you accidentally bypassed their turn in initiative order because they never ever spoke up or seemed to 'be there' were all, "no no I missed my turn, that's okay, I'll get it next time" because they wanted to be martyrs at least in their own mind to players who would pass notes "I'm going to steal Bob's sword when he's sleeping the next time we're in a big town and sell it." because they were 'roleplaying' a thief.

The quoted part struck a chord with me though as I heard that conversation over teamspeak or read it in guild forums in a MMOG venue where some people would get mad at other people because they didn't have their characters maximized for the utmost in efficiency. "But I like this hat, I think it makes me unique." - "Yes but the stats don't do anything for you, at level XX you should have #001_uberclasshat". And that kind of thinking isn't something that goes hand in hand with with a PnP game.

But with that said, if a player is intentionally taking powers that contribute to the duration of combat because of the mechanics involved in processing his turn are a burden to the others then certainly it should be dealt with in a viable fashion.

If the length of combats are an issue there are ways to deal with it or at least alleviate it.

Since I wrote that quote, I will explain the reasoning behind it.
And I can guarantee you that it has nothing to do with getting to the "end game" of the D&D.

I do not like 4E combat as it takes way too long, sometimes longer than 3E. We have one player in particular who loves to take overly-complicated powers that are more time consuming but equally or less effective than other powers.

This was my way of saying "stop it" to that one player without coming out and saying it.

Yes a minor action to recharge, not much of a cost. I'm also a bit of a 'challenging' DM in that I rarely use easy encounters except for roleplay purposes. So a 5 encounter day would be pushing it really and 3 or 4 encounters are probably going to be the norm. Worst case it's a bit of a power bump and I add in a couple of extra monsters to absorb the damage output while giving the players more options on how they want to deal with it.

For my guys I use the 'second wind can recharge an encounter power instead of healing' house rule that i've seen on sites. They also can have a 'story point' that gives them a re-roll on anything if they participate in the roleplay email I send around before the night we play. Between those two and action points the guys have lots of options and they really value their dailies. I guess my only hesitation is that allows PCs to use dailies every 3 encounters, and they usually rest after 5 or so...that is a lot of daily usage. Not nessessarily a bad thing, but something to consider.
-Would the recharge be an action or what?

Honestly I don't try for a narrative. I give an overall description of what they're trying to accomplish. "You can take on a challenge to help shore up the defenses of the fort, you could for instance help direct the placement of supplies, bolster the confidence of the defenders, try and determine the most likely routes the orcs will attack, whatever you feel might give you an advantage." So then one player might say, "Okay I'm going to intimidate the troops into fighting harder just like some hard ass DI or crusty old sgt on the front lines." and then it's just some rolls to determine the outcome.

If I want more realistic narrative then I go freeform and the 'characters' tell me what they're trying to accomplish we talk it out between players and DM and when I feel a roll is needed I just toss in an appropriate DC with a related skill.

I too would love to listen in on a professional DM or three running campaigns. The Penny-Arcade podcasts don't really give anything other than a series of battles which while appropraite for the venue, a one shot play session, for a longer running campaign there would be narrative/roleplay/skill challenges and I'd really like to hear those.

This is by far the hardest part of DMing 4th Ed. for me. I just can't get a nice narrative going when it comes to skill challenges.
A simple trek through the wilderness becomes a series of rolls that lasts 1 minute because I just cannot wrap my head around these skill challenges.
I NEED MP3's OF MIKE MEARLS RUNNIG THESE THINGS!!!!

Hmmm, I'd say it's an option instead of roleplaying for those that aren't comfortable with RP or simply have no desire for it. Certainly a skill challenge doesn't feel like roleplaying to me at least but then I've seen a half hour RP discussion on buying rope in my group in the past, in character. For the record silk came out on top.

I have run my skill challenges this way since the beginning. Skills that affect the situation in a minor way gives a cumulative situational bonus to Major skills that affects the situation. Major skills count towards successes...

Overall though I got tired of skill challenges and realized it's bogus. It hinders role playing and skill challenges are just an attempt to make a framework for skill uses. It's an incomplete system and they are still working out the flaws. It's like the developers were playing too many "indy games" and felt like pretentious geniuses when they came up with skill challenges and labeled the whole idea of using skills to overcome a challenge a brand new invention.

I'm glad you like the idea although it was definitely based on someone else's inspiration. Yes I do believe that the first time you hit a group of players with the idea it might make for a pretty enjoyable (for the DM) reaction. I believe I'm going to toss in some diablo 2 essque quill throwers with a recharge of perhaps 6 or maybe 5/6 if I'm feeling really mean that fling their quills. I see them as having one attack that's close range, a blast 4 perhaps encounter power that does really good damage and a single target quill shot that does low damage but adds ongoing damage along with the sickened effect. Should be fun. ;)

Ciao Dennis,

I'm lurking in your blog since quite a while, and I have to admit you really have a lot of great ideas.

This one is indeed clever and well-implemented; I plan to use it in my campaign. I'll let you know the results, especially my players' reactions ;)

I have to agree with this comment. We, my group most of whom have been friends for 20 years, play to have fun. As the sole DM (for DnD), it's my job to balance things (except the one time when I really wanted the campaign to die due to issues with the inclusion of new people) as needed. Characters don't have to be balanced with each other, they simply have to be fun. The changes I've made to 4th edition (and previous editions) have always been to make the game more fun for my players either individually or as a group and not to balance it per se. I re-work the wizard, a class WOTC admits is not really what they wanted and the PHB2 classes prove it, and I get diehards gasping, "Oh noes, that's completely unbalanced!". So? I'm making the class actually fun for the player who picked the wizard to play without detriment to the other classes.

But as always your mileage may vary.

I think a lot of the 'math' issues arise because in part that WOTC has stated that this is the most balanced and math 'right' version ever. So people are always going to pick a stance like that apart. In addition a lot of the current gamers also play MMOG's where balance (and the nerf bat) are huge deals because most of them tend to have PVP elements and Bob the Warrior has to be at least close to balanced to Steve the Mage and vice versa or you end up with nothing but groups of BoB's or Steve's, whichever is the current strongest.

Back in the 2nd Ed. days, there was no internet to talk about broken math, no errata "patches" via downloads, or anything of the sort. We just played what was there in the book, and if sometyhing sucked we changed it.
Who knows how badly "broken" the thaco/hit die/ac stuff was back then, nobody really cared.
People should just play the game and stoop trying to nitpick it apart.

Sorry for the "anonymous" thingny. The movie was The Frighteners (recall that one? 1996...), and the creature's appearance can be found here: http://www.otherkidspacklunch.com/WindowsLiveWriter/frighteners03_thumb.jpg

Sorry, my mistake, old history, Kyrell was a paladin that lost his faith and calling over the treachory of a woman and turned to the dark side and took up the arts of necromancy in order to bring back his one true love. Very "The Mummy" but it was long before that movie. In these articles though both should be Lightbane.

Is it Kyrell Lightbane or Lightbringer? You have both.
I like the monster, pretty cool. Makes me think of the scurrying and wall-jumping reaper in the horrible ghosthunter movie that Michael J. Fox did a few years back. Pretty cool monster, both yours and the movie's.
Also, I don't think a Stealth check grants invisibility, although I may be wrong. It grants...something else. I just suhhest to check it out to make sure it's not a mistake.

Very cool. The wizard does seem more controllerish with those added effects.

I tried to do a double damage dice thing but ended up cutting a quarter of enemy HPs. The add half level to damage rolls seems like it would scale better.

The commercial system you're thinking of was probably Rolemaster, which was crazy with tables for catastrophic damage- my second guess would be the Morrow Project, which if I recall correctly had tables to track the path of a bullet through your body. Ahhh, good times...

Danger, Will Robinson! The reason Marks don't stack is to prevent a pair of Defenders from pulling a monster in two directions. A Paladin using his Sacred Warding on a Fighter, who then marks the monster with Combat Challenge, could cause a DM meltdown.

On the other hand, it looks great and the flavor is perfect. If your party doesn't have another Defender (and if the Rogue promises not to take the Rakish Swashbuckler Paragon Path, which turns him into a Defender), go for it.

I did make a change to one of the first level powers the one that lets them hit up to 4 creatures? I gave it a burst 1 area, otherwise to me it was way overpowered as it was allowed significantly more damage out put than say scorching blast since it was only limited by the range of the weapon which is in itself signficantly better. And how often does a DM allow the players to catch more than a few minions in an AOE? Other than that minor change which to me seems like an oversight, I'm allowing it. I just wish I knew where it came from so I could post it for others as I really like the class.

I have a copy, but I don't remember where I got it. I did do the math, and it's very on par with other classes - in fact, it's almost identical in crunch to the 4e ranger, minus melee.
