Yep, no game survives contact with players. :) Luckily even bad criticism can be constructive when viewed with an open mind.

I definitely hold Old School Hack's "success" (as tiny niche games like it are measured) as a result of LOTS of playtesting. Multiple groups, multiple scenarios, etc. The game grew a lot.

Sounds like you should just forbid shooting twice with the same hand, since if I understand correctly it's better than double-tap, better than dual-wield, and costs no build points.

Not a bad idea but there are some things about the system you don't know that I do. :)

Getting four attacks would cause going first in initiative to be very valuable due to the mechanics I have in place when you do hit someone. i.e if you daze them any damage they take while dazed is boosted. (weeks of programming and running combat simulators required it for balance).

And I have a player who would always shoot four times if he could. :)

And I do have a double tap mechanic in place but you have to buy the skill for your character to use it effectively and then for math purposes, it allows you to roll twice with a negative but take the higher of the two rolls. Rather than going the way some systems do and increasing your damage output, I use it to increase your accuracy. It's enough of a boost to validate your choice in spending build points on it but not so much that a player would feel it necessary to take just to keep up with the jones. or that's been my intent. Whether I succeed or not is another story.

How about: you can only attack twice with the same weapon if it's a modern pistol ("double-tap" is ok, but not double stab), and both are at -4 just as if you were using your off-hand (you're rushing the shot even more than usual). Both guns blazing would be four shots at -4...

Yes, the system is aimed to emulate ACTION! rather than realism. :) All action, all the time! Face Off, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Golden Ticket, Shoot'em up!, The Expendables, Conan (Arnold of course), The Mummy etc.

I think it depends on what you're trying to encourage/emulate. I think dual-wielding, whether of pistols or blades, is relatively rare in real life.... but practically essential in a John Woo movie.

An interesting rewrite to D&D's Ready an Action. I like it. I especially like how you're naming all your mechanics. It's a fun idea.

THANK YOU for this idea. I'm collaborating with another person to create our game, but most of the work is done online with Google Docs and we don't do a lot of face time, so this sets up for a system so we can see the changes we're making and also make it easier to resolve conflicted ideas.

That's the thought. Lord knows I'm not a fan of random characters mechanically, haven't been since the old days of roll 4d6 and put them in order on your sheet. But two of my players commented they wouldn't mind a little bit of random so I tossed it into the stew to see how it melds.

At first glance I was against this kind of thing, but after reading through the whole post, it can make for some interesting changes along a character's development. A more organic feel to why a particular character knows certain skills too.

That's where GM authority comes in. With that assumption of GM authority, he only has you make one research roll at the library, and rides the success or failure of the scene on that roll. (Well, either that, or he invokes a rule in the books about only counting the most difficult test you made, if you make the same roll a bunch of times in a scene. This becomes very important in fights.)

The latter example is handled by the "Say Yes" philosophy: if nothing's at stake for failure, the players don't have to roll the dice. They get a straightforward answer. So... "I check the door for traps." There's nothing at stake for failure, so the GM says, "You don't find any." No test. Again, badgering the GM for a test is something that the game explicitly allows him to clamp down on.

Having the kids wandering in and out of the room made it difficult to say the things in character that I really wanted to say.

I really enjoyed this; it was much different than anything else we played, although I find it difficult to narrate my own fights - I'm so used to having a structure in place! Since I didn't actually USE my madness talent or my exhaustion talent, I'm thinking of changing the exhaustion to be something more useful. I'll have to give that some consideration.

Burning Wheel has this, sort of, but without the randomness. You advance a skill by logging a certain number of "routine", "difficult", and "challenging" tests, which are rated according to how many dice you rolled during the test. The game also very explicitly says that badgering the GM for tests that don't make sense is poor form, and the GM is permitted to just say "no".

I like that approach. I think that, if the GM considers it appropriate to say "no" to a player's attempt to shove in a skill test, this sort of thing is fine. After all, if it encourages the players to reasonably broaden their skill set, I count that as a win.

The most common random mechanic I'm familiar with kind of has that. Various d% based systems where you get one roll and if you roll over (assuming the better the skill the higher it's value) then you get to raise it up. So as you get better as a skill it gets harder to raise it or not so much harder as it happens less and less frequently.

Perhaps a limit of X skills can be raised per session and then assign a penalty mechanic so that the higher the skill the less of a chance it'll work. The player would try the skills in the order he wanted them to raise and if one didn't raise, he woldn't lose one of his X but instead just have to try another skill. If he looped all the way to the bottom of his skilsl then he'd start over at the top. This would over the course of time though tend to level out the players skills. The high ones would raise less often and the low ones more often no matter how he ordered them until eventually they were all in teh same ballpark.

Not sure if that's a desired result or not.

I kind of like the idea of having a chance to level up skills that you have used during a session. To balance out players that might try to use all their skills every time (not necessarily a bad thing, though), I would suggest this as one solution: Players can choose the order in which they make the checks, and with each check, there is an increased penalty on the roll, so if they try to level up 1 or 2 skills, it should be relatively easy, 3-4 more difficult, 5-6 very hard, etc. It would limit the skill growth while still allowing some skills to most likely level up each session.

The name's familiar but I can't recall any details on it. I'd bet I have at least the core book somewhere in the attic though it was widely published. I collect core books. I'll see if I can find it or some OGL or SRD type thing online that outlines it.

Two things about Charisma:

1) In DnD and most games based on similar systems, it is less than relevant because it is not used as a defense for social attacks and ...

2) There are no social attacks.

Look to Earthdawn by FASA (now defunct I think) for a great example of how Charisma can be used to great effect. Making sorcerers deal damage with it is not exactly creative, nor appropriate. It should be devestating in its own way, and more effective versus targets with low charisma.

Nice article - good ideas. I've run a few con games with good results; however, your advice on playing out encounters in advance alone and pegging them to real-time so as to stay on top of pacing is spot-on. I will definitely do both before the next time-slot public game I run.

Thanks!

Charisma is very wrongly considered a dump stat, and was very important in the rules as written.

It modifies the Monster Reactions result, which tells you whether you have any chance of not having to fight whatever horrible thing you encounter. It tells you the number and morale of your retainers, too which are quite important for things like hauling your gold, carrying your kit, and so on. If your torch-bearers flee in terror when somebody shows up, because you couldn't create loyalty, you are screwed.

Partially because it's so variable and situational as to what makes a character charismatic to a particular audience. I find it easier to look at their skills, character description, background etc and just play off that in a situation where charisma would come into play.

I've always felt that you have a cha stat for the same reason you have a str stat. You wouldn't ask one of your players to kick down your front door to prove they can do it in-game. People generally play these games for the sense of fantasy, they may want to play a character more or less socially adept than themselves.

I did get my copy out, the original 7th see circa 2002 ish? Not a fan of those phased based initiative systems ever since Hero system. :(

Even back in the day I found them to be too time consuming "Okay Turn 1, Phase 3, okay who can go? Okay who's dex is higher?" Now when a 4 hour session is about average, any mechanic that takes time away from that without a significant return is suspect. :)

I understand their intent and see the appeal in a tactical methodology, it's just the time involved to get them set up for each combat and then make sure that everyone has their turn doesn't work for me personally.

I do like how you can invest or conserve resources for defense or offense. At one point I did consider every combat starts with a pool of dice per person and they spend those to shift their rolls either offensively or defensively but discarded it after some play testing. Note that was per combat, not per turn so it's not the same per se.

I have the Rewrite which can be used to interrupt an action in what may be a similar thing to the Drama Dice? The Rewrite is used for, well rewriting the action as it goes along. It's a heavy movie theme for my system. You can take minor narrative control and rewrite the scene, "Hearing all the gunfire a passing patrol car swings into the parking lot" or "A previous occupant dropped a hair clip which fell into this crack. I can use that to pick the lock.", mitigate damage "It's not as bad as it looks.", change your initiative order (interrupts require a opposed roll though), add bonuses to your skill rolls (before rolling) or invoke an Experience/Trait to add bonuses to a skill roll (after rolling) and a few other things that I don't remember off the top of my head.

I love just about everything about that game, but one of my particular favorites it the iniative system. Rather than rolling one die and then going in order you actually roll a certain number of d10s that's usually notated like such (r5k2), with you keeping the number of dice equal to the k.

You then write down your number and iniative goes based on phases (there are 10 of them).

So let's say you've got three characters who are taking actions:

PC One: 1, 5, 7, 9
PC Two: 3, 7, 8, 10
NPC One: 4, 7, 7, 9

Starting with phase one each person who has a die in that phase goes, followed by phase two, etc. If there's a tie it goes to the person with the highest Panache (basically Speed). Here's where the active defense comes.

Say PC One decides to attack NPC One during the first phase. He can do so. The NPC can choose to use a passive defense, which doesn't cost anything. Alternatively the NPC cvan choose to spend two of his action dice from later in the round to use an active defense, but then he doesn't have them to use later on in the round. You can also choose to hold an action to allow for active defenses later, at which point it just costs one die.

There's also Drama Dice which can be expended to interrupt an action, but that's a separate thing entirely.

I haven't played (I play roughly and literally about 1% of the systems I own due to group inertia and 'it's not what we're used to'). I will dig my book out the closet though and go back and look at it. I really should get one of those automatic paper feeder/scanner things, cut the spines off everything I don't have PDF's for and set up an automated conversion line so I can have a reasonably searchable database.

:) No player engagement is my personal quirk. Doing what I can to keep players focused on what's going on. In the 80's and 90's I don't remember it as being a problem at all. At least until UO came out and then I started to have a saying, "Okay Distraction is apparently playing with us tonight. I'm tabling this session and we'll try again next time." And I would, shut it down that is. We'd sit and bullshit about games or tv or whatever but I'd refuse to run a game when only 15 minutes of an hour was about the game. :)

Move to the 2000's and ennui, deja vu, distractions, other concerns are all competing for the player's attention. At least my current group.

Hey man, thanks for this playtest review, I'm finding it really useful as a guide to 'how people would modify our work'. ONe of the things we love is people taking what we've done and playing with it. I'd only make one note though. Unless it was modified/changed after it was written, the 'search success' rules are in the 'extra rules' section as outbreak has specific search weirdness that's not in the normal system. Hope that's helpful.
It's funny, some of the stuff you've mentioned as house rules have made it into the system. The idea of putting a 'profession card' in is pretty much a must during charcter creation, reflected in 'Path cards' (if you have core). This adventure however, was written before path cards were invented, so the chracters were never assigned them and seem balanced without.
Anyhow, have fun with it. I alway love to see how people end up doing :)

Oddly, the player engagement issue wasn't the design goal of using an active defence. It was to put a bit more realism in so that a fighter cannot stand in the middle of a bunch of orcs, relying on their AC to keep them alive. Though this design decision has thrown up an advantage.

It removes the need for rules about flanking and position because that is built into cards / resource mechanics. If you have no cards left to defend against that third orc, it is because it has attacked whilst you were busy fighting off the other two. Even without a resource mechanic, this can be explained in a dynamic defence as what happens when the player rolls badly.

Getting rid of all the stray +/- modifiers that clutter a lot of combat systems speeds the game up which help compensates for the speed lost by not having a flat target.

Hi Dennis,

Thanks for taking the time to playtest 6d6 and for writing such a detailed report. It is the certainly the longest we have seen and in fact I haven't read it all yet (sorry, on a bit of a deadline this morning). I will catch up with the rest soon when I add you to our Reviews section [ http://6d6rpg.com/6d6rpg/reviews/ ].

Just to answer a couple points you raise. The search check mechanics are in the adventure [ http://6d6rpg.com/wiki/doku.php?id=open:oneshots:outbreak:oneshots ] though they are missing from the Core rules. This is an oversight and something we need fix. Your house rules pretty much picked the same targets that we recommend for exactly the same reasons.

You mention the idea of giving character's career cards. These are known as Path cards [ http://6d6rpg.com/wiki/doku.php?id=open:mechanics:universal:usingpathcards ]. They are an optional mechanic that gives character creation some structure and allows the character a versatile card for background knowledge. For various reasons we didn't use them in the Outbreak! adventure.

Increasing the points value for rotating cards is a workable mechanic but it presupposes that the game will be combat heavy. If you are playing a game that has almost no combat, the Rotate keyword adds nothing to the card's usefulness. Making a player pay extra for this would be unfair. Of course, the flip side is true. In combat heavy games they are worth more.

In playtesting, we found that the benefit of having all cards the same costs (i.e. easy to learn, no worries about trying to assess the relative values of different keywords) outweighed any concern over balance. Ultimately, as all the characters and monsters have equal access to and pay equal costs for rotating cards, the game is kept in balance.

Again, many thanks for taking the time to review the game.

Chris

I always dig actual play podcasts... I don't listen to any on going campaigns, but when I'm interested in a new system I quickly google [system] actual play podcast. I find hearing the questions in real time and the ability to listen while on a walk, a bout of insomnia, or driving to work can give me a much better picture of the system than a summary.

There are some that might argue that without those long periods of trivial pursuit of XP then the awesome scenes have less impact. To which I have to respnod "Brrrrrrrpppp" or whatever letters are used to describe the sound you make when stick your tongue out and blow so it vibrates in a derision'y manner. :)

I've just come to the belief that every encounter should further your storyline, your plot or simply have something about it that's awesome. If that means that the 100-150 8 hour session campaigns I used to run in the 80's are now 15-20 5 hour sessions because I cut all the fluff out? So be it, I'll just switch genres or systems and do another one of similar size.

Good points. I have been on both sides of the table and the games I have played and run are most engaging when something cinematic is going on, whether it is a battle or a conversation. We do not want to watch a movie where the characters spend half the time shopping, so slash that out of your game. If your player wants something, let them have it. Move on. And you are right, battles should have a point beyond expending resources in exchange for gaining experience.

No thank you for coming up with something that's uniquely different than 99% of the RPG's I've read which is a lot. :) I should have an actual play narrative at some point from playtesting and most likely a podcast as well for at least one session. You had me at Zombie with the Outbreak! scenario. I can't refuse a good zombie apocolypse.

Many thanks for taking the time to write such an extensive review the system.

The purchased 6d6 Core rule set only includes what you've read for free on the web site. Setting specific rule sets, such as 6d6 Magic or 6d6 Bots will fill in the missing gaps.

Anyone interested in picking up the system should check out our New's Day Sale that features up to 80% off selected products.

http://6d6rpg.com

Hi, sorry I've not owned a mac since they only came in black and white. :)

Assuming you have a wireless connection then there shouldn't be anything specific to do with the imac at all. You should just have to put the details for your wireless access point into the nook. By going into the wireless settings it should show a list of all the wireless access points it can see around it, this may be just yours or it could be a bunch depending on how close your neighbors are and how many of them might have wireless devices.

Then it should just be a question of selecting your wireless access point in the list and then putting in the access key that should be set up on it.

You may want to just verify that it's work by going to any Barnes and Noble and it should automatically join their wireless network and should be able to search for books etc. If it's not working there then it could be turned off on on the nook or it might just not be working.

Hi

I have a new Simple Touch Nook and cannot get it to connect to wifi. I have an iMac and am not tech savvy, so trying to add the address to my Mac is not easy for me. Also when I power up the Nook it will not show settings.

So, how do I get my new Nook to connect via wifi with an iMac (linksys) and how do I get the nook to show me the settings box. I have the address the Nook shows me to use on my iMac but I cannot find where to add it. It prompts me to register and go through that whole process but I cannot for the life of me figure this out.

It's pretty much finished. I don't forsee doing much more with it other than possible adding new boards and cards. I've added a few new boards and cards as of right now.

The AI would be more aimed at solo play. You can fake it though. This is how I play it solo, when Z make attacks they draw 1 card per Z, if the card is usable it's used and if not it's discarded. Z always move toward the closest hero. If there's a choice they always go after the one with the least health. They're always spawn with preference toward spawn points that are closest to the heroes. The rest is pretty much the same, common sense as to what favors the zombies the most.

WoW! I just was wondering how awesome would be to play this game online!
I think it doesn't need AI, its not such fun when you play against comp, one of the best things in boardgames that you play with other thinking persons. (although sometimes they are just as dumbs as the worst ai, or even...)
IMO the pc version of the game should be exactly like the boardgame. So if there are 2 players, then one of them's with the zombies, the other's with the heroes. and so on.
Anyway, I'd love to get a notice if you finished with your work! Keep it up!
Cheers

ps.: i know its your own work, and you do it like you want to, these were just my opinion on how should it look like

One thing we've noticed over Skype is how much side-chatter disappears. In person we would be able to whisper questions about skills, make side comments, all within reason. Obviously we were all engaged in the game, but if someone had a question or comment it could safely be made w/o interrupting the game.

Not so on Skype, all players have equal voice weight and the ability to filter out noise is significantly reduced. Instead of processing one guy saying what he's going to do, and another set of players reminding each other which Lizardman they attacked last, you hear a jumble and everybody has to stop.

Yeah, I'd love to use this for a serious horror adventure sequence. Something out of the Nightside or Bedlam where the crazies are the sanest thing going for you and the shadows are filled with teeth and claws and dark laughter that would make a hyena present its belly with a whimper and puddle of urine.

I considered it but seriously, sharks stink. There isn't enough fabreeze to cover that stank up. I can't have stinky lasers. I can't, I won't!

I wonder though, how much of it is actual decision fatigue or just frustration/anger/irritation with having to spend more and more time with people who do bad things all day long that by the end of the day you're at a 'they all deserve the worst they can get'.

I don't know that I usually have the described decision fatigue but I damn sure have a problem with my 'give a damn' as my grandmother used to say being used up when I'm tired.

+Charles Moore I'm going to go without.
Specs are a fairly badly kept secret at this point. 4.65" screen, 720p resolution 1280x720, dual core 1.5ghz processor, 5mp back camera and 1.3 mp front camera.

The leaked video shows an extremely smooth interface with some nice 3d effects. All the carriers will have it, the question is how much of an exclusive Verizon has.

It's also a naked droid experience, no manufacturer's bloatware installed and as a result it'll get updates a lot faster, always a plus. One might even leave it as stock rather than immediately rooting it. Although the droid community has proven time and time again they can work wonders on android phones, increasing performance and battery life in every case and sometimes OMG levels.

Granted I'd rather it had the 8mp/2mp cameras of the SG2 but the increased resolution and screen size make it more desirable at the moment. You use the screen 100% of the time, the camera rarely comparatively.

All the nexus's have had pretty high comfort levels with their users.

Realistically while there may be some sentiment at the personal level of the executives, I'm willing to bet the decision was purely business related. Their big unveiling would a) be overshadowed by the Job's funeral and continued OMG'edness and b) the unveiling of the 4S as Apple's 'big' announcement takes some of the heat off their own release so they can work on any remaining issues.

Of course I could just be a cynical bastard. ;)

I don't have mine handy and I don't use the social network. At a guess I'd say that something wasn't cleared properly or resinstalled correctly. When in doubt lather rinse repeat as necessary and try both wipe methods again.

Given what I know that rooting does I don't know that it should affect this, it's not like you're putting on a new OS, just getting root access.

If another wipe doesn't work, I'd just call their tech support and say the social thing isn't working, fix it. Obviously don't even mention the word root and if they bring it up play the "Uh what is that?" I'm an computer illiterate card.

I did the full wipe and recovery, but strange thing is that my Social network is not working ? I click on it and nothing happens. Is it because I am still rooted ? How can I know whether I am still rooted ?

Thanks

I've been thinking about "alternative" dice mechanics ever since I read that Conquest of Nerath's default hit was 6... units have a die associated with them, the larger the die the more likely to hit, but it was always 6 or greater. Seemed pretty simple and works well for the mass combat system that game is.

This might be worth a try, I'd love to hear someone with better math skills stat up a 1st level character and few monsters with this system to see how it might look. We use MapTool and a 4E framework that does the math & damage application, but I've been interested in an in-person game but have been worried about getting frustrated with the pacing slow with the dice rolls and math.

Thank you for the 8-reset trick. I had a rooted nook2 that wouldn't boot, and reregistering it (left/right bottom hold at boot) did not get it out of the infinite loop at boot. The deregister + 8-reset trick removed root for me, and gave me a new nook build.

There is a thread on the XDA forums where someone has a clean image of the Nook Touch. I'm not coming up with it at the moment but you can check through these - http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=860 for it. I didn't have a problem returning to stock but I've read of others who had the same experience you have had. That after doing the restore they're still apparently rooted.

Attempted the full recovery to wipe the nook, but the android root is still there, and attempts to resign. The rooting was messing up my battery life, and making it hard to use the stock B&N shop. Still having these difficulties...
