“Entropy Tower”

Entropy Tower
I blatantly stole the name from PVPOnline’s July 30th cartoon but I was noodling with something a little more phat lewt’ish in terms of dice towers.  Rather than a series of ramps it has pachinko influenced rods that bounce the dice around inside.  A square one would be doable of course but the round tower is kind of cool don’t you think?

I like to 3D stuff before I start conspiring to build it as it just helps me visualize things and greatly decreases issues with the design in terms of workability.

I think it’s hilarious when you google dice tower pachinko my site is (or was at the time of this writing) number 2 in the results.  You know how many people kill for page 1 google results.  :)

    That looks awesome!

Perhaps something like this: The tower could be composed of separate cylinders which stack and rotate (and interconnect obviously). Each would contain the crossed elements which could then be randomly aligned by rotating each section. The bottom cap (angled to facilitate dice exit, I assume) would also rotate to reveal or conceal the exit gap. If the bottom dice receiver cup was a separate piece that could be removed and used to cap the top, you could then store your dice within the tower when the crossed cylinder elements were aligned. Apparently I have too much free time.

That’s a very good idea. You could make each section perhaps 4″ high and that would let you build it as high as you wanted. And yes that would make one sweet ‘dice tube’ to store your dice in. I feel the need to hit the plumbing section to see what might be available in the needed sizes to make a prototype or two.

Heh, nice to see that I wasn’t the only one inspired by that comic. I made a design and put it together at the sign shop I work at – quite different from yours, and I’m still playing with the design, because I’d like to build more “suspense” into the dice rolling function…anyway, here’s one of my prototypes.

Sweet! Although the first thing that flashed through my head was old school popcorn box before they became sacks and 50 gallon drums. But very cool!

    Pringles can!
We need a Pringles can version!

:) You could do it actually. Get some 1/4 dowels from the hardware/lumber store and then put one every inch or so through the can. Turn them about 60 degrees off center each time in a clockwise direction. You’d need to glue in a slant at the bottom and an opening to dump it out but it would work.

Since I read that strip in PVPOnline a while back, I’ve been thinking I want to buy one of these. Has anyone as Scott if he knows anyone that sells them? I am going to ask around at GenCon this year, and if not, it sounds like there might be a market out there…
