I completely forgot about doing maps for my module so that explains the delay. I’ve got a couple roughed out, okay to be honest they’ll probably go in as is, each one will have a DM’s version in miniature that’ll go near the appropriate page(s) that detail the encounter as well as a full size one that can be printed out and used as a battlemat. Or at least I think they can, they look okay in adobe anyway. I might also add in ‘printer friendly’ versions that are simply line drawings for the battle mats, those should be semi quick to knock out.
To do the maps I’m using Dundjinni mapping program. Out of the box the amount of artwork you can use is for the most part limited and the quality of the textures in many cases is at best average. Yes I’ve been working with textures and texturing since around 1985, I’m qualified to say something is average in quality in that respect.
But the program while not extremely intuitive does serve a function and it’s a lot faster than drawing in Photoshop even if the Photoshop would be ‘cooler’.
I was thinking of creating the encounter areas in 3D and taking top down and perspective views but that’s more work than I’m willing to put into this. Not that creating things in 3d isn’t fun, it must be or I wouldn’t have been doing it for the last 23 years, but I think the ROI wouldn’t be worth it. Perhaps if I was going to try and commercialize it, charge a a couple of bucks for it or something then maybe.

I too am looking into mapping programs. What about Dundjinni do you like? what made you choose it? To me it looked like a good program, but you’d have to buy a ton of graphics packs to get the cool looking maps that they tout about as made with Dundjinni. Cartographer looks good too, but I don’t know. Right now i’m sticking with the free solution, Inkscape and free tiles and art from various free art sites. But i’ve been looking for comparision reviews of these and you sound like you would be qualified…
also, your antispam character thingy to post comments is horrible, even if i put in the right characters it still tells me it’s wrong.
