This episode always seems to come up when we get together and reminisce over the old days. To set up, the party consisted of a fighter, a wizard (2nd edition), a rogue, a ranger, a fighter and a cleric. They’d ended up far from the surface in the depths of a ancient natural cavern system. They came across areas that were covered in a layer of glistening hard coatings. Then some not so hard and then some that were downright gooey.
They were traipsing through a large cavern when sprays of acid shot out from overhead hitting half the party and starting to dissolve clothing, armour and skin.
The party had already seen some pretty hard times and it was with the last sputtering of divine favor turned into healing powers that they managed to keep everyone alive to run away.
You wouldn’t think a slug could go very fast but you’d be wrong. Chased by three acid spewing slugs our intrepid but beat to hells and gone party ran like girls. With hot sizzling death on their heels they picked a corridor at random from the several that exited the large chamber. Wrong choice. The corridor ended in a vertical shaft.
The mage, Trebor, cast Fly on himself and went up the shaft. Everyone else jumped out onto a thick heavy rope that was swinging in the center of the shaft hoping it would hold. It did. So they started going down.
One of the slugs poked it’s big mushy head out of the corridor. Seeing it’s neck swell up Trebor knew it was going to spew acid on his friends down below and probably sever the rope. So he used a wand they’d found which cast essentially a ring shaped fireball.
Guess what happens when you cast a fireball in an enclosed space? Things tend to burn. The rope, already stressed beyond it’s safe point snapped and the players fell down the shaft. The slug it turns out was highly flammable and burst into flame. In it’s death agonies it fell into the shaft.
So you have six people falling down a 200′ shaft, burnt and singed, with a 2500 lb flaming slug falling down after them.
Oh it was hilarious!
